Champagne Marguet was started in the early 2000s by Benoit Marguet. The Marguet family has been based in the prestigious village of Ambonnay for several generations. Before Benoit took over, most of their fruit was sold to larger domaines. When he did, he converted their 8 hectares to biodynamic farming. The only sprays used on the vines are homemade tinctures, and the plowing is done by horse. The land is treated with the utmost respect and care.
In the cellar, the methods are very much in line with the natural wine ethos: spontaneous fermentations and very limited sulfur. These are wines meant to show a clear image of the terroir they come from. If you want purity, elegance and finesse in your Champagne, you will absolutely love these.
A note on the vintage: these are all from the 2021 vintage which was an unusually cold vintage for modern times. Expect these to be focused and fresh as a base line.
2021 Oger Grand Cru
100% Chardonnay from Oger in the Côtes de Blancs. The grapes are purchased from a very respected grower who farms organically. Oger is known for wines with a rounded feel, often charming and unctuous.
2021 Avize Grand Cru
100% Chardonnay from Avize, just north of Oger, sourced from the same grower. Avize typically brings brighter, citrusy high tones, mouthwatering acidity and salinity.
2021 Ambonnay Grand Cru
Mostly Chardonnay with a touch of Pinot Noir, all fruit grown by the Marguet family. Ambonnay is known for richness and power, but this bottling always has a bit more mineral chisel that lifts the wine up.
2021 Les Crayères
"Les Crayères" is the name of the plot this wine comes from. 100% Chardonnay from old vines farmed by the Marguets, planted on very shallow topsoil over hard, fragmented chalk. This wine is all about minerality and deserves to be cellared for many years.
2021 Le Parc
Also named for its plot. Old-vine Chardonnay farmed by the family, planted on deep sandy limestone with a layer of chalk about a meter down. That makes it a bit more generous in its fruit, but it will still benefit from further aging.
